NFL Preseason Week 3

Today’s Starting Bankroll: $1,843.10 (Yesterday’s Bets)

The NFL preseason Week 3 is officially underway and a few years back we would all be dreading such a week. Not this year. NFL preseason Week 3 has now officially become the tune up game for the start of the NFL regular season. Here is a break down of what you should be watching for each matchup:

Jacksonville Jaguars vs Atlanta Falcons

  • Roster Battles: The Jaguars have depth at wide receiver, defensive line, and cornerback, with final roster spots still up for grabs in these areas. Key players to watch in NFL preseason week 3 game include WRs Tim Jones, Elijah Cooks, Joshua Cephus, and Austin Trammell, as well as rookie pass rushers Myles Cole and Jordan Jefferson. The cornerback rotation, particularly the battle between Montaric Brown and rookies Jarrian Jones, Deantre Prince, and Christian Braswell, will also be critical to monitor.
  • QB Situation: Falcons head coach Raheem Morris implied that QB Michael Penix Jr. has shown enough in practice, as he won’t play in the final preseason game against the Jaguars. Kirk Cousins will also sit out, leaving Taylor Heinicke and John Paddock to play. Paddock might be a practice squad candidate, while Heinicke’s extended playtime could hint at a potential trade, making his performance worth watching.

Miami Dolphins vs Tampa Bay Buccaneers

  • Backup QB Battle: The Dolphins’ QB2 competition between Skylar Thompson and Mike White remains unresolved after both struggled with completion rates and accuracy in preseason games. Thompson had a modest performance against the Commanders, while White performed better against Washington’s backups. The NFL preseason week 3 game against Tampa Bay will likely determine who secures the backup role, with the loser potentially relegated to the practice squad.
  • Pass Rush Focus: With YaYa Diaby injured and Randy Gregory no longer with the team, the Buccaneers’ pass rush is under scrutiny. Diaby and Joe Tryon-Shoyinka are expected to start once Diaby returns, with Anthony Nelson also in the mix. Young players like Chris Braswell, Markees Watts, and Jose Ramirez, who had three sacks last week, will be watched closely. The Bucs are looking for new depth as Tryon-Shoyinka and Nelson enter contract years.

San Francisco 49ers vs Las Vegas Raiders

  • Offensive Rhythm: Brock Purdy’s limited action against the Saints was hampered by the absence of key players, including Trent Williams, Brandon Aiyuk, George Kittle, and others. With the expectation that starters will see more playtime in the next game, there’s an opportunity for the 49ers to establish some offensive rhythm before the season starts. The availability and health of other key starters will be crucial.
  • QB and RB Battles: Gardner Minshew has secured the starting QB role for Week 1, leaving Aidan O’Connell with a final chance to make an impression in the game against the 49ers. Minshew’s performance will be critical, as O’Connell could step in if Minshew struggles. Additionally, the game will help determine the third-down back position, with Ameer Abdullah and Dylan Laube competing for the role.

Carolina Panthers vs Buffalo Bills

  • Secondary Concerns: With most starters potentially sitting out again, the Panthers need to address their secondary issues. Jaycee Horn is set at one cornerback spot, but with Dane Jackson out for at least six weeks, there’s an opening. Dicaprio Bootle and D’Shawn Jamison are leading candidates, with Jamison performing well recently. Rookie Chau Smith-Wade is also making a case for himself. Potential trade discussions could involve the Panthers and Bills.
  • Run Game Evaluation: The Bills’ win over the Steelers provided limited insights due to key players sitting out. The run game showed promise, and Ray Davis, who impressed despite being a late draft pick, could play a significant role as a change-of-pace back. While James Cook remains the primary back, Davis’s performance in the upcoming game could solidify his role in the offense.

Pittsburgh Steelers vs Detroit Lions

  • Offensive Struggles: The Steelers’ offense has been ineffective in preseason games, with poor performance from the first team and issues on the offensive line. Russell Wilson and Justin Fields both struggled, and Jaylen Warren’s injury could impact the team into the regular season. Penalties have also been a problem. The competition for the starting QB position remains open, and it’s uncertain whether Wilson and Fields will have another chance to prove themselves.
  • QB Backup Battle: Jared Goff’s backup situation is under scrutiny, with Hendon Hooker showing promise in his best preseason performance. While Nate Sudfeld could start as QB2, the Lions, aiming for a Super Bowl, might not keep three QBs on the roster. Hooker’s performance against the Steelers could be crucial for securing the backup role, and preseason standout Sione Vaki will also have a final opportunity to make the 53-man roster.

Baltimore Ravens vs Green Bay Packers

  • WR Competition: The Ravens’ top three wide receivers are likely Zay Flowers, Rashod Bateman, and Nelson Agholor, but the remaining roster spots are uncertain. Devontez Walker, a fourth-round pick, has struggled with injuries, and Deonte Harty’s return skills add to his chances but raise questions about his receiving capabilities. Tylan Wallace, who was starting to stabilize, faces competition from newly added Anthony Miller and other candidates like Russell Gage, Keith Kirkwood, and Malik Cunningham. The final WR spots could be decided after the upcoming game against the Packers in NFL preseason week 3.
  • Packers QB2 Battle: The Packers’ offense struggled significantly last week, highlighting concerns about their QB depth. Jordan Love’s potential absence raises concerns, as neither Sean Clifford nor seventh-round pick Michael Pratt has separated themselves as the clear backup. The QB2 position may be decided based on performance in the upcoming game against the Ravens, leaving the team in a precarious situation.

LA Rams vs Houston Texans

  • QB Preparation: After a rough start with four interceptions in the first preseason game, Stetson Bennett improved in his second outing and will likely get additional reps against the Texans. This preparation is crucial for Bennett as he may need to step up in Weeks 1 and 2 if Matthew Stafford, who is dealing with age-related and recent injury concerns, is unavailable due to hamstring tightness. The Rams need to maximize Bennett’s preparation while minimizing injury risk.
  • RB2 Battle: The Texans’ RB2 competition behind Joe Mixon is tight, with Dameon Pierce, Dare Ogunbowale, Cam Akers, J.J. Taylor, and rookie Jawhar Jordan all vying for spots. Akers has shown strong preseason performance, which is significant given his recovery from a torn Achilles. Jordan also has a chance to make an impression, potentially securing a practice-squad spot. The NFL preseason week 3 game against the Rams will be pivotal in determining the final roster decisions.

Minnesota Vikings vs Philadelphia Eagles

  • QB Depth: With J.J. McCarthy’s season-ending injury, the Vikings’ quarterback situation is uncertain. Previously expected to keep three QBs—Sam Darnold, Nick Mullens, and McCarthy—the team must now decide if they still need three with McCarthy out. Jaren Hall, a fifth-round pick in 2023, showed improvement with a 71-yard TD pass last week. A strong performance against the Eagles could be crucial for Hall to secure a roster spot instead of being relegated to the practice squad.
  • Injury Concerns: The Eagles are dealing with injuries affecting key areas, particularly in the slot DB position and offensive line. Cooper DeJean’s injury has highlighted a lack of depth at slot DB, and the second-team offensive line has struggled. Observing how the Eagles manage these positions in the NFL preseason week 3 game against the Vikings will be important, especially with first-round pick Quinyon Mitchell potentially moving between outside and slot roles.

LA Chargers vs Dallas Cowboys

  • QB Situation: Easton Stick’s performance has been concerning as he struggles to fill in following Justin Herbert’s injury. Even if Herbert is healthy for Week 1, his long-term health is uncertain. Stick will have another chance to prove himself in the NFL preseason week 3 game after a problematic performance against the Rams. If Stick doesn’t improve, the Chargers might need to consider a quarterback move before the season starts.
  • Positives and Competition: The Cowboys had some positive signs, with QB Trey Lance improving after a slow start and Tyler Guyton performing well at left tackle. However, the team might rest some starters, including Guyton, in the upcoming game against the Chargers. Additionally, the preseason offers a chance to watch a kicking duel between Brandon Aubrey and the Chargers’ Cameron Dicker, as both are capable of impressive long-range kicks.

NY Giants vs NY Jets

  • Secondary Uncertainty: The Giants have several key positions up for grabs in the secondary. Deonte Banks is set as one outside cornerback, but the other spot is contested between Cor’Dale Flott, who is dealing with a quad injury, and Nick McCloud, who struggled recently. Dru Phillips’ return from an ankle injury is a positive sign, as his absence had forced Isaiah Simmons into the slot. The competition also includes Tre Hawkins, Tre Herndon, Darnay Holmes, and David Long. While safety positions are more stable, depth remains a concern.
  • CB and Reserve Battles: The Jets’ cornerback depth chart is mostly settled with Sauce Gardner, D.J. Reed, and Michael Carter II as the top three. The competition heats up for the remaining spots, with fifth-round pick Qwan’tez Stiggers impressing on defense and special teams. Brandin Echols, a special-teams standout, may not secure a defensive role. Converted safety Jarrick Bernard-Converse is struggling with an injury, while Brandon Codrington’s return abilities might help his chances. The NFL preseason week 3 finale will be crucial for these reserves.

Cleveland Browns vs Seattle Seahawks

  • Offensive Tackle Crisis: The Browns face a major issue with offensive tackle depth following injuries to James Hudson, Germain Ifedi, and Hakeem Adeniji. With starting left tackle Jedrick Wills Jr. and right tackle Jack Conklin on the PUP list, and Wills’ status uncertain for Week 1, undrafted rookie Lorenzo Thompson stepped in at left tackle last week. The situation is dire as they prepare to face the Seahawks, with Dawand Jones likely the only reliable option at right tackle. Decisions regarding tackle positions will be critical as the roster is finalized.
  • Preseason Preview: Geno Smith has yet to play in the preseason, but he may see action against the Browns in NFL preseason week 3. Sam Howell has impressed with strong performances, especially given earlier accuracy concerns. The Seahawks are also evaluating their fringe receivers, with Laviska Shenault Jr. and Easop Winston Jr. making strong cases for roster spots. Dee Eskridge, however, has struggled and needs a standout performance to secure his place.

Tennessee Titans vs New Orleans Saints

  • Defensive Standout: Seventh-round pick Jaylen Harrell has been a surprising standout this preseason, impressing with two sacks against the Seahawks and likely securing a roster spot. With Arden Key and Harold Landry set as Week 1 starters, the Titans will evaluate Harrell alongside Rashad Weaver, Caleb Murphy, and Shane Ray to determine the depth of their pass rush in NFL preseason week 3.
  • Roster Battles: Rookie DB Kool-Aid McKinstry’s recovery from a leg injury is crucial for the Saints’ defense, though Alontae Taylor’s strong slot performance provides some relief. The running back situation is more unsettled, with Alvin Kamara’s role secure but other spots open. Kendre Miller, who missed the 49ers game, needs to make an impact, while Jordan Mims, Jamaal Williams, and James Robinson are also competing for roles.

Arizona Cardinals vs Denver Broncos

  • Pass Rush Depth: The Cardinals’ pass rush has shown promise, with Cameron Thomas impressing with two sacks and six pressures against the Colts. Xavier Thomas and Victor Dimukeje also performed well, making a case for roster spots. Cameron Thomas’ versatility and Xavier Thomas’ improvements make them strong candidates, while Jesse Luketa and others face more competition. The final roster decisions, especially for the pass-rush group, will likely hinge on their performance in the upcoming game against the Broncos.
  • QB Roster Decisions: With Bo Nix named the Week 1 starter, the Broncos must decide how many quarterbacks to keep. Jarrett Stidham and Zach Wilson are both vying for spots, with Wilson potentially having a slight edge based on preseason performance. Despite a mixed showing against the Packers, Wilson has the chance to solidify his position or attract interest from other teams with a strong final preseason game.

New England Patriots vs Washington Commanders

  • QB and Roster Decisions: The Patriots face uncertainty at quarterback, with Jacoby Brissett likely the favorite to start, but Drake Maye making a push. Maye needs to build on his Week 2 performance against the Eagles, despite rookie Javon Baker’s drops and broader offensive struggles. Offensive line and receiver spots are also in flux, and the Patriots are expected to be active in reshaping their roster before the regular season starts.
  • Receiver Battle: With Jayden Daniels named the Week 1 starter, the Commanders will focus on evaluating the second receiver spot behind Terry McLaurin. Dyami Brown has shown promise, but others like Olamide Zaccheaus and Jahan Dotson have been quieter. How this competition shakes out in NFL preseason week 3 game against the Patriots could be telling, especially if backup QBs are involved.

As NFL preseason Week 3 wraps up, teams are finalizing their rosters and addressing key position battles. With starters set to see more action, crucial decisions loom regarding backup quarterbacks, defensive depth, and final roster spots. As final cuts approach, expect a flurry of roster moves and strategic decisions shaping the upcoming NFL season.

The countdown begins to NFL Week 1.

Day #22 Recap:

$200 ➡️ $200K Challenge Bet: Nolan Jones Over 1.5 HRR

  • This guy had bases loaded and 1 out and ended up grounding into an inning ending double play. He got a double in the top of the 9th but could not get knocked in and falls I fall short again. I will reach the level 1.2 someday, someday.

Rigas FS vs APOEL Nicosia Over 2.5

  • With a score line of 2-1 in favor of Rigas you might think that we had to sweat this one a little bit. That could not be farther from the case. Rigas scored in the 31′ & 45+1′ for a 2-0 halftime lead and then APOEL scored in the 52′ to give us a easy winner.

Mlada Boleslav vs Paksi Over 2.5

  • Now this one was sweaty. There were no goals in the first half and it looked like this would be a loss. But, an own goal in the 65′ followed up by a 80′ minute equalizer by Paksi gave us some hope. I cashed that hope just 5 minutes later as Paksi took a 2-1 lead but eventually giving up a very later goal in stoppage time to end in a 2-2 draw.

St. Patrick’s Athletic vs Istanbul Basaksehir Over 2.5

  • Just a bad bet, or was it? It was. Istanbul who was heavily favored looked like they could care less to go up here in the 1st leg and they would be content with a draw away. Between the two team there was only 1 SOG.

Parlay of the Day: 2+ RBI’s

  • Rhys Hoskins: 0-4, 0 RBI’s
  • Bryan De La Cruz: 3-4, 3 RBI’s
  • Gunnar Henderson: 1-4, 0 RBI’s

Day #22 Profit/Loss: + $12.79

What I Learned:

bet365 Not Great After All: I received a message late afternoon in my bet365 account saying that I was on thin ice because it appeared to them that I gave my account information to someone else to use. That could not have been farther from the truth so I reached out and asked how they thought that. They said there were indications on my account that lead them to believe that others were betting on my behalf.

When I confronted the Live Chat person and asked for an explanation they would not give me one. I could only determine that they did not appreciate me winning nearly $1,000 this month. I literally have done nothing wrong so I withdrew all my money and took it back to Draftkings who gave me an opportunity at $500 in bonus bets for coming back.

Thanks DK. I will feature those bonus bets (5 – $100 bonus bets) when I receive them in about a week. So yes, we are back at DK but, we are happier not to be bothered by nonsense and $500 richer!
