I think before I get into my negative spin on this we should all applaud Emmanuel Clase for a great accomplishment in his career to this point. He is the most dominant closer that I have witnessed that has ever worn a Cleveland Indians/Guardians uniform. At just 26-years old this guy has a lot more time left in the MLB and when all is said and done I think we might be calling him one of the greatest closers of all-time.
But…
In the realm of should this be celebrated outside of Cleveland, OH, I am not sure this is very newsworthy. Prior to Emmanuel Clase breaking this record it was previously held by Cody Allen with 149 saves. In the overall aspect of MLB save leaders that record in fact was not impressive at all.
Cody Allen with 149 saves was good enough for 8th lowest for a player who was the save leader for a franchise. The teams that had lower leaders in the save category were all established after 1970 with the exception of the Phillies. The Indians/Guardians were established in 1901 which means they had a 69-year head start compared to those other teams.
Now you can argue that the Cleveland Indians were not good in the 1970’s and 80’s and they really did not have save situations. Okay, but still to nearly take 123 years to get a closer to 150 saves is honestly a embarrassment in my opinion.
Even within the organization if you look at the numbers it is quite astonishing how bad the Cleveland closers have been before Emmanuel Clase.
If you want to be fair to the organization or at least Emmanuel Clase most of the closers did not have long stints in Cleveland. Cody Allen was only in Cleveland for 6 years.
Bob Wickman who held the record until Allen broke it played with the Indians also for 6 years. If you were a Indians fan between 2000-2006 you know that this guy gave you a heart attack every time he took the mound. He would give up a hit, walk a guy and always have two on with no outs every single time he came into the game. He would get a strikeout and a double play ball and we would all go home and have a drink to calm our nerves down.
I do not miss these kinds of save situations in the least.
The only other name on this list that you may know if you are a Cleveland fan is Jose Mesa who is 6th all-time on the Cleveland Indians/Guardians save list with 104. He only played for the Indians from 1994-1998. Every person in Cleveland knows that this guy on the list does not mean anything. Why do you ask?
…because the 1997 World Series Game 7 blown save is all us Indians fans think about when we hear Jose Mesa.
Listen, I am not trying to hate on Emmanuel Clase as what he has done has been nothing less than remarkable with the dominance he has established as the Guardians closer. I just want it to be clear that although it is an accomplishment, it was with a team that has never had someone that saves games. The bar was very low.
Also, as we learned from Jose Mesa, can Emmanuel Clase make the last save of the MLB season because that is what we as Cleveland Guardians fans are only going to care about come October.
Day #31 of Sportsbetting
Today’s Starting Bankroll: $1,960.27
Bet Size: $19.60
The sweep streak comes to an end as I went 2-1 with my best bets yesterday. I stayed undefeated in NCAAF.
$200 ➡️ $200K Challenge Bet: Alex Verdugo Over 1.5 HRR
- I just cannot get past Level 1.3. Verdugo went 0-3 and the Yankee’s other than Wells did not have that great of night offensively. Other than the Cleveland Guardians they might be the most overrated team in the MLB.
Lyon vs Strasbourg Over 3
- I thought three minutes into this match this was going to be an easy winner, and it was. Strasbourg on the road and the worse team smacked Lyon in the 3′ to take a 1-0 goal. Lyon responded right at the end of the half to tie it 1-1. Strasbourg then scored in the 48′ & 58′ to cash my bet and take a 3-1 lead. Hats off to Lyon though who in front of their home crowed scored 3 goals (61′, 63′, 72′) in the span of 11 minutes to win 4-3.
Union Berlin vs St. Pauli Over 2.5
- I will say that I am very impressed by St. Pauli to come up this season to play the big teams in the Bundesliga and for the most part hold their own. With that said, I might put them in the short term on my do not bet list. In the two matches they have played they have allowed only 3 goals and are yet to get on the scoresheet themselves. We lose this one easily as Berlin wins 1-0.
- This is what I wrote at the end of the 3rd quarter ⬇️
- This total was lost at the end of the 1st half. TCU hit two passes quickly with just 20 seconds left around the 10-yard line of Stanford. Then they rushed the snap and fumbled the ball away to trail Stanford 17-10 at halftime. I think the 2nd half is a different story or the total had a better chance of hitting if a TD is scored their. The 3rd quarter stalled and the defenses played better leaving us no shot to hit the total in the 4th.
- If you saw the score I ended up on a meaningless FG win this bet, unreal. Glad I stayed up to watch NCAAF chaos at it finest.
Parlay of the Day: 2+ RBI’s
- Triston Casas: 0-5, 1 RBI
- Gleyber Torres: 1-3, 0 RBI’s
- Jose Ramirez: 2-4, 0 RBI’s
Day #30 Profit/Loss: +10.51
What I Learned:
Sunday’s = Naps: I am going to be exhausted on Sunday mornings for sure. With college football on Friday’s headed into the wee hours of the morning and then Premier League starting early on Saturday my sleep is minimal on Friday nights. On Saturday’s this fall it is just going to be worse. I have Premier League followed by about 14 hours of College Football. I will have to keep track of how many times I am just rolling out of my bed for the Cleveland Browns games.
