Olympics: Fun or Foe?

Unpopular opinion: The 2024 Olympic Games are a colossal bore.

Frankly, so are all the Olympics.

It’s like we’re all in on this big charade, pretending that these events are the peak of excitement when, in reality, they’re just a glorified snooze-fest. Take a moment to think about it: who’s genuinely thrilled about watching a Californian skater or a swimmer from Kansas? The worst part is that we all act like we have been with these athletes through their journey the last four years, but in reality 99% of us are just learning their names at the 2024 Olympic Games Opening Ceremonies.

Let’s rewind a bit. The Olympics used to be this grand spectacle—a moment when the world came together to celebrate athletic greatness, cultural diversity, and the human spirit. But now? It feels more like a non-stop marathon of second-tier sports on ESPN Ocho. We have added breakdancing and 3 x 3 basketball in recent years. It’s as though the grandeur and anticipation have been swapped out for a never-ending parade of events that barely hold our attention. Don’t even get me started on the Kayak Cross. What’s next puzzling?

And why, oh why, do we need two entire weeks to get through this? It’s not just the length that’s maddening—it’s the scheduling. Some events don’t even kick off until the 2024 Olympic Games are nearly over. It’s like waiting for the climax of a movie that you’ve been sitting through for two weeks. If you’re anything like me, you’re left scratching your head, wondering if they’re just dragging it out for the sake of it.

But let’s get down to the real issue here: the athletes.

And before you accuse me of being a grumpy old man, hear me out.

The likes of Katie Ledecky, Simone Biles, and the USA Men’s Basketball team are so far ahead of their competitors that it sucks all the suspense out of the Games. It’s like watching a group of champions who are so dominant that they make the competition look like a bunch of amateurs.

Remember the Dream Team of 1992, Michael Phelps’ breathtaking swims, or Usain Bolt’s world-record sprints? Same thing, this has been going on for decades now.

The 2024 Olympic Games are less about celebrating human achievement and more about watching a formality.

And let’s not forget the sheer overload of events. Do we really need 35 swimming events? It’s like they’re just piling on events to fill the schedule and keep us watching. Each swimming event might as well be a carbon copy of the last. We get it they swim using their arms in different ways. It’s the definition of monotony.

So here’s the bottom line: the Olympics have lost their sparkle. They’ve become a drawn-out spectacle of predictable outcomes and redundant events. But if you’re inclined to keep pretending that the 2024 Olympic Games are the pinnacle of global excitement, go ahead. I’ll just be over here, grumbling about the entire charade.

Day #4 Recap

We had a losing day, going 0-1-2 after some absolute chaos took place in the CFL. It has been 4 day’s and we have seen two excruciating bad beats. Let’s talk about them.

Sam Frelick Over 1.5 HRR (+100)

  • He did not start so there was no action on this bet. He ended up pinch running but if a player does not start the bet is voided

Toronto Argonauts +4 (-110)

  • This ending in a push was about absolute bulls**t.
  • The Argonauts took a 23-6 lead into the 4th quarter and I actually stopped paying attention to the game. I put my daughter to sleep, turned on the STL SC Leagues Cup match and mentally chalked this up to a win.
  • I happened to check the score with 2 minutes remaining in the game and noticed that the Calgary Stampeders were up 24-23. What the heck happend?
  • It didn’t matter, we were still covering and Toronto was getting the ball back and you have to think even if they fail to go score, Calgary will run out the clock for the win.
  • Wow, was I wrong. After a turnover on downs Calgary decided to kick a 49-yard field goal with 39 seconds left and give our +4 a push….unreal.

Nathaniel Lowe Over 1.5 HRR (+120)

  • Nick Pivetta was on the bump for the Red Sox vs Rangers and he was coming off 3 straight losses including one that resulted in 20 runs from the Rockies just last week.
  • Today, he went 6+ innings only giving up 2 runs on 2 hits.
  • Lowe was an underdog to get there regardless of Pivetta’s pitching today, but he did not look good in his four at-bats striking out twice.

Alternate 2+ RBI Parlay (+35600)

  • Verdugo did not start so this was voided.
  • Pages did not start so this was voided.
  • Pete Alonso went 0-3.
  • 0-2-1 on the parlay. $1 lost.

Day #4 Profit/Loss: -$11

What I learned:

Sunday Baseball: With the postseason of baseball just a couple months away it looks like managers are sitting their players on Sunday just a bit more at the moment. Honestly, I rather have a voided bet than a loss, but, need to do a little bit better job of anticipating some of these resting days for baseball players. Also, it looks like its the time of year where teams that are horrible, like the White Sox, A’s, etc. are just starting to lay down even more hoping for this 2024 season to come to an end.

Combating Bad Beats: This is the second time in four days that we have been brutalized by a bad beat, although this one at least ended in a push. It makes you want to rip your hair out and its pretty easy to see why most recreational bettors chase losses. I love to read, in particular some James Patterson. I think from now on when I lose via a bad beat I am going to go read for 30-minutes to make sure I don’t feel the need to chase a loss. Hey, at least were not watching the 2024 Olympic Games!
